Westport NYC Westport

7:30  Awake

Arrive at Westport and wait until 9:30 am for Larry the mechanic is on board, he adds a little 30 WT oil and advises us to go for tests while going around the bay.  Daniele is convince the problem is when the engine is especially warm. We go out and gun the motor trying it out.

On return, the reverse almost no longer works, it must push up to 3000 rpm for it to engage in reverse.

Verdict: NOT GOOD. Larry contacts a transmission shop he used two years earlier - Rick Nerey's  East Coast Marine Transmission in South Amboy New Jersey near New York.

He says if we manage to deliver the transmission to Rick tomorrow morning, he assures us that he will repair it first and that it should only take two or three days. Bravo, we do that, we'll deliver it by hand.

On the downside, we are in the countryside, there is no taxi or Uber or Lyft.

After an afternoon of telephone calls, Allan managed calls up a friend from Burlington to pick us up and get us to Burlington to rent a car so we could bring the transmission to South Amboy.

We can not say that we are bored!

Larry removes the transmission and we put it in a box.

6.30 pm Departure to Burlington with Allan's friend Andy Johnson

8.30 pm Avis Rental, Burlington Airport USD $102 per day <sic>

9.30 pm Departure for South Amboy

We have not yet dinner, we will surely find a place where we can eat a bite. Oh yes, I forgot, it is past 21:00, in the area the kitchens are closed.

23:00 Burger King Dinner

Tuesday, July 17, 2018

As the night will be very short, we decide that it is not worth renting a room in a motel.

1h15 Truck stop Dodo

5h00 Departure

7h45 Arrival at East Coast Marine Transmission

He says he has other work and needs to order the parts.

9h30 We return to Westport

The sky darkens, then large drops are blown on the windshield. Looks like popcorn bursts. Now it is raining ropes, reduced visibility, slow and cautious driving.

13:30 Troy. Stop at the Walmart, pharmacy, grocery store and electronic counter to make a personal hotspot because south of Westport it is not easy to have a network.

Visit the liquor store of the small shopping center where, to my astonishment, there is a very impressive selection of wine. Again, the manager tells us if we buy 12 bottles of wine, we get a 15 percent discount.  In fact, I remember in Cape Vincent, we were told to tell the liquor store that we were Canadian, we would get a discount.

4:30 pm I am back in Westport. Allan goes back to Burlington via the ferry to return the rental car before we get charged another day.

5.30pm Daniele washes the clothes, sheets and linens at the marina laundry.

5:45 pm he is on the ferry to Burlington

8:10 pm After delivering the car to Avis, I got a Lyft to the Charlotte Ferry

At Rick's, I made a sign that said "WESTPORT" that I would use to hitch-hike back from Essex to Westport on the Ferry.  It worked.  Someone picked me up and drove me to Westport.

21:00 We attemptted to eat at the restaurant of the Marina ... closed kitchen. Salad and tuna at Bellum on the Lake.
